NORSE begins with a simple principle: understand the material first, choose the process second, and make every important result measurable.

WHERE IT STARTED

AFRICA CHANGED US.

When we first arrived in Mali almost fifteen years ago, we stepped into a world we were far too naïve to understand.

We came with European experience, technical knowledge and plenty of confidence. We thought we could improve things. Perhaps, in our own way, we even thought we could change the world.

It did not take long to discover that the world was considerably more complicated than that.

WE WENT TO AFRICA THINKING WE MIGHT CHANGE SOMETHING.

In the end, Africa probably changed us more than we changed Africa.

WEST AFRICA

LEARNING BESIDE SMALL-SCALE MINERS.

Our early work was alongside artisanal and small-scale miners in West Africa. Equipment was often basic, recovery methods inefficient and working conditions difficult.

We tried to improve equipment, recovery methods and practical working routines without pretending that imported technology alone could solve everything.

We taught what we knew, but at the same time we were learning something larger: how mining actually works when capital is scarce, infrastructure is limited and a family’s livelihood can depend on what comes out of the ground that day.

We also made mistakes. We misunderstood situations, trusted arrangements that should have been examined more carefully, and sometimes failed to listen closely enough to the people who understood the local reality better than we did.

FROM WEST AFRICA TO TANZANIA

A NEW COUNTRY. NEW LESSONS.

The next chapter brought us to Tanzania in East Africa. What began as an invitation to explore the development of a new mine did not turn out as expected. Neither did everything that followed.

For the past three years, much of our work in Tanzania has been about understanding before designing.

Listen to the miners

Understand what actually creates trust, what causes disputes and what a workable formal route must do better.

Work with the system

Engage with licence holders and mining authorities, and study the regulatory framework instead of assuming how it works.

Learn from weak structures

Test agreements and operating models, then use the gaps and failures as design information rather than hiding them.

FIFTEEN YEARS TO ARRIVE HERE

THAT EXPERIENCE BECAME NORSE.

NORSE is our answer to a question we have been trying to solve for almost fifteen years:

How can modern technology, practical mining knowledge, transparent measurement and local experience be combined in a system that genuinely works for small-scale miners?

We believe the answer is not simply better machinery. It is a structure in which responsibilities are clear, knowledge is transferred, results can be measured, and miners, licence holders, technical partners and authorities can build trust around the same facts.

WE DID NOT ARRIVE HERE BECAUSE EVERYTHING WE TRIED WORKED.

We arrived here because we learned from what did not.

THE PRINCIPLES

TECHNOLOGY IS ONLY USEFUL WHEN THE LOGIC IS RIGHT.

The philosophy is not an abstract statement beside the operation. It determines what NORSE tests, what it refuses, how results are measured and how trust is built.

Understand before processing

Mineralogy, particle size and liberation determine what can realistically be recovered.

Gravity first, where it fits

Physical separation is preferred where the ore makes it technically sensible.

Say no when the physics says no

If characterisation shows that a route cannot deliver a credible result, the right decision can be not to process that material that way.

Measure what matters

Weight, samples, grade, concentrate, tailings and mass balance turn claims into numbers that can be checked.

Trust is designed into the process

The miner should be able to understand what happened to the material and why.

Knowledge should remain

Training, testing and practical understanding are part of the system so technology does not remain a black box.

A process becomes credible when people can see the logic, measure the result and understand the limits.
